ALT Software and aicas Partner to Extend JamaicaVM with OpenGL Display Capabilities

OpenGL and Java companies combine to provide comprehensive platform-independent embedded solutions

TAMPA BAY, Florida (Software and Systems Technology Conference) - June 18, 2007

ALT Software, a worldwide supplier of DO-178B certifiable 2D/3D graphics solutions and development services announced today that it has teamed with aicas, a leader in Java technology for safety critical realtime applications, to provide integrated OpenGL drivers for use with aicas' Java Virtual Machine for object-oriented software development. This collaboration will yield the most flexible, deterministic, optimally performing display software for the aerospace & defense, avionics, automotive/telematics, industrial, consumer, and medical embedded markets.

Delivering on its commitment to provide embedded developers with reusable, scalable, and reliable device software, ALT Software's OpenGL drivers now offer to aicas' JamaicaVM, an extensible, high quality display solution aligned with the non-proprietary advantages of this open standard graphics API. ALT's OpenGL drivers enable the customer to achieve the performance benefits of hardware accelerated graphics and support a variety of off-the-shelf and custom processor and graphic ASIC combinations. Certifiable to DO-178B Level A, ALT Software's 2D/3D graphic libraries provide a variety of product options including driver binaries, binaries plus source code, diagnostic tools, and the full set of artifacts required for certification of the driver in its target environment.

JamaicaVM, aicas' flagship product, is a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that provides performance guarantees for all primitive Java operations and fully deterministic garbage collection, thus satisfying the main requirement for hard realtime performance. It is the only JVM that has an efficient and reliable hard realtime garbage collector offering unparalleled reaction latencies. Guaranteed to recycle all discarded memory, the system eliminates memory leaks and fragmentation, which are the cause of many serious bugs in embedded applications. JamaicaVM is also small and extremely efficient - an ideal development environment for critical applications.

"Java offers the promise of platform independence and code reusability", said Dan Joncas, vice president of sales at ALT Software, "while aicas offers the realtime garbage collection, determinism, safety critical standards, and high performance of their JamaicaVM product line. Together, we offer all the advantages of open standard software but with the safety, security, and stability of being well-established leaders in our respective technologies."

"ALT's OpenGL expertise both from a product and services perspective helps aicas provide whole solutions to our customers," said Dr. James Hunt, CEO of aicas incorporated and aicas GmbH. "We are pleased to be able to add the versatility and graphic power of ALT's OpenGL 2D/3D product family to our highly optimized, small footprint JVM."

Live Demo at SSTC

To see ALT Software and aicas in action, SSTC attendees can visit the aicas booth, #520. The demo showcases the OpenGL technology on the Freescale Semiconductor Lite5200 reference platform featuring the AMD/ATI M9 GPU.
