Honeywell Aerospace & Honeywell Defence
Honeywell Aerospace and Honeywell Defence required high performance DO-178B certifiable OpenGL ES and OpenGL SC graphics libraries to support various commercial and military avionics display programs. The solutions required support for both PowerPC and x86 processors as well as several real-time operating systems (RTOS).
After rigorous performance and reliability testing of ALT’s products, Honeywell selected ALT Software’s DO-178B certifiable OpenGL ES and OpenGL SC graphics display drivers. Our products have since been deployed in aircraft worldwide to enable a variety of Honeywell avionics displays. ALT’s embedded graphics libraries support several real-time operating systems including Green Hills INTEGRITY , Wind River VxWorks, , and DDC-I Deos. Our display drivers also support Microsoft Windows to accommodate software development and testing. In addition to the graphics libraries, ALT also provided Honeywell with all the software code traceability and other certification artefacts required for their DO-178B certification effort, for both Intel x86 and Freescale PowerPC based avionics display platforms.
US Navy – Target Acquisition Advanced Development
The U.S. Navy was implementing high resolution graphics into their targeting systems to enable weapons personnel to track more targets simultaneously, more quickly lock onto threats, and increase targeting accuracy. This legacy systems upgrade would include sophisticated hardware accelerated graphics.
ALT Software delivered a high performance OpenGL ES graphics library for the AMD ATI Radeon GPU selected by the manufacturer for graphics rendering functions. Our graphics solution also included a long term migration path that cost-effectively addressed the U.S. Navy’s future software and hardware upgrade requirements. ALT was selected because of our track record of delivering scalable safety critical embedded graphics solutions for aerospace and defence environments, and our long-term strategic relationships with GPU manufacturers.
CMC –Esterline
When the US Navy chose the Raytheon T6B as its next-generation jet trainer for naval aviators, Raytheon put in place an aggressive production schedule that included modern integrated cockpit display systems.
CMC-Esterline put together a bid that was compliant with Raytheon’s tight delivery schedule and included ALT’s DO-178B certifiable OpenGL SC graphics display drivers. As a previous ALT Software client, CMC was confident that ALT could meet the demands of this avionics project despite the rigorous efforts involved in rapidly delivering a software solution compliant with DO-178B certification requirements. CMC won the contract and ALT successfully delivered a DO-178B certifiable ATI Radeon OpenGL graphics driver running on the ARINC 653 compliant Green Hills INTEGRITY-178B RTOS.
Esterel Technologies
Esterel Technologies provides a “SCADE Display” HMI development tool used for graphics design and code generation for avionics applications with DO-178B certification requirements. They required a software partner to support customers using this tool to create applications for embedded systems with hardware accelerated graphics.
Esterel and ALT forged a strategic relationship where ALT is the Esterel preferred technology partner for Esterel customers who require hardware accelerated graphics support. ALT’s graphics libraries bring out the full graphics rendering capabilities of a device’s underlying hardware, allowing SCADE Display application designers to focus on leveraging Esterel’s design tools to create an ideal end-user experience. ALT Software is now Esterel’s long-term preferred partner for embedded and DO-178B certifiable graphics solutions. ALT’s OpenGL products have been deployed with Esterel’s SCADE Display by dozens of Tier 1 aircraft and system manufacturers.
GE Fanuc Controls Embedded Computing (now GE Intelligent Platforms)
GE Fanuc Embedded Systems, manufacturer of ruggedized graphics boards for the Mil/Aero market, needed a software supplier with expertise in hardware accelerated graphics to provide their customers with embedded display drivers that support their graphics boards and single board computers (SBC) with a number of different real-time operating systems (RTOS).
GE Fanuc selected ALT Software to provide a series of embedded graphics display drivers for their PCI Mezzanine Cards (PMC) that utilize AMD ATI Radeon graphics processors. Our solutions support the OpenGL and OpenGL SC open standard graphics API and GE Fanuc’s proprietary video API. Today, ALT provides long-term technical support to GE Intelligent Platform’s customers as well as system integration services and DO-178B certifiable graphics display drivers for safety critical environments. ALT’s graphics display drivers have allowed GE Fanuc (now GE Intelligent Platforms) to offer their Mil/Aero customers a turnkey COTS graphics solution complete with long-term support and customization services, which has contributed to dozens of GE design wins worldwide.
Boeing B-52 Legacy System Upgrade Program
As part of Boeing’s B-52 cockpit display system upgrades, they required embedded OpenGL graphics drivers and embedded X Windows support for the AMD ATI Radeon based GE Intelligent Platforms G2 Graphics PMC graphics board. Their use of a high performance PMC Module adds hardware accelerated graphics support to VME and Compact PCI platforms and includes functionality such as video capture and dual-display support.
ALT delivered 2D and 3D OpenGL graphics drivers and embedded X11 libraries that provide support for X11 client-server based applications deployed on the Green Hills INTEGRITY real-time operating system (RTOS).
Airbus A380 Avionics Displays
Airbus required a DO-178B certifiable graphics driver to enable the graphics rendering functions of the Onboard Airport Navigation System (OANS) in the cockpit of their ultra-high-capacity A380 flagship aircraft.
ALT Software delivered a DO-178B certifiable software package that utilized their OpenGL SC (safety-critical) graphics API. Our solution included custom features and functionality enhancements as well as all the code traceability and additional artefacts required for DO-178B certification by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Today ALT’s drivers are deployed in A380 aircraft worldwide, providing improved safety and situational awareness to the flight crews of this immense engineering achievement.

Fujitsu and ALT collaborate to support telematics and automotive display systems
Fujitsu was looking for a device software supplier to provide a series of graphics drivers for current and future generations of their graphics and SoC processors. In addition to providing high performance display drivers, the supplier would also be required to assist Fujitsu customers with system integration, consulting and performance optimizations.
Fujitsu selected ALT Software as their preferred device software supplier to customers deploying the Fujitsu Ruby, Emerald, Carmine, JADE and Coral PA graphics controllers into their next generation infotainment and 2D/3D navigation systems. ALT has since created a custom video handling and a number of OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL ES 1.1, OpenGL 1.2 and OpenGL SC drivers that support a wide variety of real-time operating system and hardware configurations that include Fujitsu graphics cores.
Ferrari deploys ALT OpenGL ES in their in-vehicle infotainment systems
Ferrari and its Tier 1 suppliers required an OpenGL ES graphics driver provider that could support their next generation in-vehicle displays as well as provide long-term support and a product roadmap that addressed Ferrari’s future graphics display requirements.
ALT Software provided OpenGL ES products that support the next-generation 2D and 3D graphics displays used in Ferrari’s ultra-luxurious Scaglietti grand touring automobile. We also provided a long term migration path that cost-effectively addressed Ferrari’s future software and hardware upgrade requirements. ALT worked closely with Ferrari’s component supplier ecosystem to provide display drivers that could be seamlessly integrated into Ferrari devices and leveraged the full potential of the system configuration while respecting the power and memory constraints of the automotive electronics. The successful deployment of this technology can be found in Ferrari’s Scaglietti models today.

Microsoft Windows 3D Graphics Translation Layer
Microsoft required a proven supplier of high performance graphics software to create a custom OpenGL to DirectX translation stack for the next generation of their Windows operating system.
Microsoft selected ALT Software because of our extensive experience delivering graphics solutions that supported many generations of Windows operating systems. ALT worked closely with Microsoft over a multi-year development project that included product development as well as ongoing OpenGL and DirectX graphics support to Microsoft’s development teams. Today, millions of Windows users worldwide are using software solutions, developed by ALT, in their desktop and notebook computers when they play video games, use professional graphics design and CAD/CAM applications, and run any other applications that require OpenGL to DirectX translation.
Christie – Professional Grade Video Projection Systems
Christie, a global leader in projection technology and visual environments, wanted to update the media controller software used in their world-class video projection systems.
Christie selected ALT Software to create a suite of custom solutions that would bring out the best performance in Christie’s next generation of video projection systems. ALT was selected because of our vast experience in video subsystems and our ability to use our embedded multi-media graphics expertise to accelerate Christie’s time to market. Our services included completing the full development cycle, QA testing, and the development of a comprehensive documentation package for Christie’s product engineers.
Fisher-Price – Digital Arts and Crafts Studio
Fisher-Price, the most trusted name in toys, was creating a device that made it fun and easy for young children to use home computing systems to play and draw in a safe, child-proof environment. The Digital Arts and Crafts Studio is a tablet device that enables children to draw, paint and print through a highly intuitive user interface.
Fisher-Price selected ALT Software to help them realize their design vision for what is essentially a human-machine-interface (HMI) device for young children. ALT’s Development Services group worked with the Fisher-Price design team from the early stages of concept and feature definition through development, testing and final product release. The Digital Arts and Crafts Studio became an award-winning success and has been a strong seller for years. Fisher-Price and ALT have since worked together to develop additional accessories and theme upgrades for this highly successful product.
Broadcom - Digital TV Set-top Box
Broadcom’s DTV division (formerly part of AMD) required a company with a unique set of embedded systems experience and skills to provide the custom video and embedded graphics software required for their next generation digital TV and set-top box TV peripheral devices.
AMD / Broadcom selected ALT Software to provide a number of different software solutions that included system boot loaders, graphics drivers, and custom video codec. These solutions have since been deployed in a wide range of entertainment devices produced by a variety of leading consumer electronics manufacturers.

Honeywell Video Security Systems
Honeywell Video Security Systems required a series of graphics, video and other system-level device drivers to support their next generation video security system.
ALT worked closely with Honeywell engineers from initial design to final production and delivered a suite of embedded software and firmware that supports graphics, audio, video, and computing functions. The deliverables included custom video drivers to support several Intel Extreme Graphics and AMD ATI Radeon GPU on the Wind River VxWorks real-time operating system. ALT Software also provided LCD display drivers, CD-RW device drivers, PCI-IDE controller firmware, and Intel-based AC97 codec audio drivers. Today, ALT Software’s solutions are used in a number of Honeywell’s commercial-grade video security systems.
Optosecurity – Airport Carry-on Luggage Scanning System
Optosecurity, a leader in the airport security industry, wanted to upgrade their “Optoscreener,” a carry-on baggage checkpoint screening device that uses X-Rays to automatically detect weapons and liquid threats. Optosecurity wanted to add 3D modeling capabilities to the Optoscreener to improve its liquid threat detection capabilities.
ALT collaborated with Optosecurity and completed a series of research and development initiatives that laid the groundwork for this technology solution. ALT supported Optosecurity through the entire project, assisting with the development of sophisticated algorithms that could successfully reconstruct and analyze a container’s contents in 3D using traditional 2D X-ray data. Today, ALT Software’s 3D modelling solutions are used in airport security systems worldwide.
RPC Electronics and Silicon Turnkey Express - Industrial Controls
RPC Electronics and Silicon Turnkey Express required a company with significant video and graphics expertise to provide OpenGL ES and OpenVG graphics drivers and assist with low-level industrial software design and development for their customers' next generation industrial control display systems.
Through a multiyear engagement, ALT has supported RPC Electronics and STx customers by providing a series of OpenGL ES graphics drivers as well as system integration and technical support services for the development and launch of a number of next-generation industrial control display panels. A cost-effective alternative to building an entire in-house graphics support division, RPC Electronics and Silicon Turnkey Express continue to leverage ALT's products and technical support services, field application engineers (FAE), and Development Services group to support their customers’ needs.
North Sails RM: Step Motor Controller
The world’s leading manufacturer of racing and cruising sails, North Sails wanted to add a higher level of automation to sail making machines that required manual adjustment of the thread laying arms. Their solution was to develop an industrial control device that would allow network-based control of step motors being added to each of the thread laying arms.
ALT Software provided a series of board-level software modules, custom graphical applications, and on-site system integration services for this new step motor controller. After being successfully deployed and tested on the target sail making machine, this new industrial control system was then migrated to a new sail making machine capable of three times the production of the original. At less than $200.00 per unit, the new compact industrial control system ALT developed with North Sails has proven itself as a cost-effective alternative to expensive industrial PLC controllers and PC-based control systems.
